Getting Down to Business

Welcome

Welcome. This blog is a place for me to discuss my experience developing a web based business for my Brigham Young University Idaho B250 Web Business class. It is my hope that I will be able to learn more about myself and the subject matter I am studying by contemplating it each week. Who knows, if it goes well I may continue to discuss my adventures in starting a web business.

Week One

This is the first full week of the class and we dived right into generating 20 business ideas. I was able to come up with the first ten relatively easily, but I decided to take a break and mull over the other possible businesses. When I came back I had a harder time of it, but I actually came up with the best idea of the top five.

Project 1 Worksheet Data

The Doctor Who blog with revenue based on advertising came in first on the first worksheet based on number of hits from one keyword, but on the second worksheet where we check of top three keywords it came in fourth. The price for advertising was way out of my budget. I thought a cat blog with an affiliation model to Amazon would be the big winner, but it came in second on both worksheets. My next idea was ‘good music’ blog. This scored third on my first worksheet and last on the second. Very few clicks for my advertising budget here as well. My fifth business idea, and intro html/css/javascript website business based on advertising on the first worksheet came in 3rd on the second. None of these can even compare to the click-rate of my fourth best idea. Cool Art blog with a mix of the affiliate and advertising money. It had 4 times as many clicks as the cat blog idea. Notice that none of the merchandise model business made the top five for me.

What did I learn from all this?

I learned that I shouldn’t limit my ideas to what I think may be the answer. The cool art blog idea was one I floundered for, but it turned out to be a good idea based on the clicks per advertising dollar. I think the end lesson here is that there is a lot to learn from all these fancy analytical web tools. I think I’m going to hold back my judgement until this project is over.
